They have no other choice.EDTShareTweetShareShareThe time is now for the Braves’ pitching prospectsReinhold Matay-USA TODAY SportsThe Braves made the decision to rebuild through pitching. We’re about to find out just how successful the rebuild-through-pitching strategy was. This isn’t to ignore the magical ride that was the 2018 season, or to say the Braves ignored hitters during the rebuilding seasons of 2015-2017. But think about it: Nearly all of the trades netted at least one pitching prospect of note — including the robbery of Touki Toussaint — and eight of the club’s 11 draft picks in the top 100 from 2015-17 had pitchers selected, including two top-five selections in Ian Anderson and Kyle Wright.Think about the turbulent spring for the pitching staff in Orlando:Mike Foltynewicz has barely pitched with a sore elbow. The Braves insist he’s fine and they’re being cautious, but the timeline keeps getting pushed back. First it was opening week, then it was the second week of April, and now it seems probable he won’t appear until the end of April or even the start of May. This is assuming, of course, that his elbow doesn’t start barking again once he lets loose in a live-game scenario.Kevin Gausman battled a shoulder issue early on. He’s made two starts since then, recording a total of six outs. He's a little behind schedule, sure, but we’re running out of time. He likely has two more starts to make before the club breaks camp for Atlanta; will he be ready to throw 90+ pitches against the Phillies or Cubs during that first week?I don’t want to beat the Julio Teheran horse to death any more, but the concerns about his future are well documented by now. He’s got the third-worst FIP (4.89) among qualified starters over the last two seasons. In an attempt to change things up, he’s begun throwing strictly out of the stretch and ditching his windup. He’s had a nice spring and has always out-performed the advanced metrics, but betting on a sudden turnaround is far from a guarantee.Which Sean Newcomb is going to show up? He was so good in the first half of 2018, but the wheels fell off during August and September. He hasn’t been good this spring, either, which won’t alleviate concerns. It’s silly to evaluate spring training stats — the Red Sox have the fewest wins of anyone in the Grapefruit League — but does anyone feel overly confident sending Newcomb to the mound until he proves otherwise? He’s being counted on as the team’s No. 2 or No. 3 starter, at least on paper. The Braves didn’t add any pitcher this offseason. Literally not one Derek Holland Jersey , starter or reliever, to the 40-man roster from outside the organization. The reason for it, at least from what I gather, is they have supreme confidence in their young wave of pitchers.Max Fried. Touki Toussaint. Bryse Wilson. Kyle Wright. These guys are about to get thrown into the fire. They all got a taste last season, but none of them were truly counted on like they’re about to be in 10 days. Two of them will the rotation as the fourth and fifth starters. I’d imagine one will be in a 6th starter/bullpen role, especially with concerns that Gausman, Newcomb and Teheran can consistently work deep into games. The fourth of the bunch will likely be in Gwinnett awaiting the shuttle to Atlanta. It’s going to happen sooner than later. Assuming that pitcher is Bryse Wilson, he will be joined by a bevy of other noteworthy pitchers who could see Atlanta as soon as next spring.Mike Soroka belongs with the group above — and may be the best of the bunch when it’s all said and done — but two shoulder injuries in the last 10 months are a legitimate concern. Soroka’s ability to get (and stay) healthy will go a long ways towards a successful year. He’s reportedly aiming to be back in late April. To be Dr. Obvious for a moment, his emergence would be huge. The Braves’ decision to not add reinforcements was a gamble, and we’re quickly seeing the risk that it brings. They’re going to rely heavily on a handful of twenty-somethings with a combined 11 big league starts under their collective belts to open the season. These guys won’t be counted on just for a couple starts in April; they’re an integral part of the Braves’ long-term plans. Atlanta needs them to be good.Hopefully the club gets Foltynewicz and Soroka back soon, Gausman is able to get back to his old ways, Newcomb finds more consistency in his third season and Teheran rights the ship. The old phrase goes, “You can never have too much pitching.”The Braves, with aspirations of another National League East title and beyond, are about to find out in a hurry if they have enough. Man, that was good to see again."The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Honorary Star of the GameIt’s been a minute since we’ve given Joey Votto some serious dap. Though in all honesty, that’s largely due to Votto having been decidedly un-Votto for most of this season, with his power numbers having cratered since his bang-up 2017 season for the Cincinnati Reds. That’s a pretty ripe thing for us to have done http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authent ... ria-jersey , in hindsight, since even though he’s not been his usually god-like self this year, he’s still the NL’s runaway leader in OBP - at an even .420 entering play today - and his measly 126 OPS+ entering play today is equal to the career mark of one Johnny Bench.Votto, though, smacked the heck out of a grand slam today to finally, finally reach the double-digit dinger mark on the season, and it was the kind of swing that gave us hope that he might just re-lock-in for the final push this season, just days before his 35th birthday.Congrats on the big fly, Joey, and here’s to being Joey Votto once more.Honorable Mentions are due to: Matt Harvey, who fanned 10 in 6 innings of 2 ER ball, walking 3 and allowing 4 hits in a solid all-around effort (that even included a single at the plate); and Eugenio Suarez, who had a pair of hits and scored a run.Key PlaysThe Reds went nuts in the Bottom of the 2nd, plating 7 runs against San Diego starter Robbie Erlin. Suarez led off with a single into LF, and Curt Casali followed with a single two batters later. Brandon Dixon’s RBI single then plated Suarez, and Harvey himself then reached on a bunt single that was prooooobably supposed to be a sacrifice. A Billy Hamilton sac fly then plated another run and moved Dixon up to 3B, which allowed him to score when Scott Schebler followed with an RBI single of his own. Jose Peraza then singled to load the bases for Votto, who promptly unloaded them with a mammoth 4-run slobberknocker halfway up the seats beyond the RF wall. Reds led http://www.giantsfanproshop.com/authent ... ria-jersey , 7-0.Harvey finally ran into a bitof a jam in the Top of the 4th. He allowed a leadoff single to Hunter Renfroe that put a runner on-base for Eric Hosmer, who followed with a $144 million leadership home run. An Austin Hedges triple and a pair of walks then followed to load the bags, but Harvey got a pair of Ks to limit the damage. Reds led, 7-2.After that, the skies opened up, and after a lengthy delay, this otherwise meaningless game between two last place teams was called, with the Reds getting the 7-2 win.Tony GraphaninoSource: FanGraphsOther NotesSchebler’s grand slam last night set a team record, as it was the 10th hit by the Reds on the season. Votto’s, of course, just added to that record.Pastrami.Capicola.Pepperoni.SALAMI!Tyler Mahle will make his return to the Cincinnati rotation on Sunday in the series finale, where he’ll be opposed by Laynce Jayson Jacob Nix.
